Paul Matty has a S3 SE BRM for sale ?75,000 ($110,000)
Its been restored by Peter Day so should be top notch
I was surprised that a BRM could carry a ?30,000 ($45,000) premium.
Are they rarer than I thought
Can someone enlighten me

I would want a mountain of paperwork and still that is a lot of money. Yes they are quite rare, but probably not as rare as they used to be.

Happy New Year to all.

I see that Paul Matty will not be at Donington this year which is a shame, apart from which I was hoping to see this car without making a special trip to his showroom.

?75,000 is a huge price for a car with no racing provenance or special ownership history. It looks lovely in the pictures, but is it just to look at and enjoy rather than use and enjoy?

If you look at it in just money terms, a chequebook restoration of an Elan now runs at ?50k to ?60k.

You have to provide the car to be restored, probably at least ?10k..Total spent, ?60k to ?70k. And then you have a standard Elan, not a BRM. And not a Peter Day restoration.

The guy selling the car via Paul has had BRM Elans for 30 years and knows pretty much everything there is to know about the cars, so it comes from an impeccable source, has been restored to perfection and has been known for many years.

It's just the best there is.

Mark,
I agree with your figures (been there), but can't get excited over an S3 Coupe with a warm twincam and 3 letters above the Lotus badge on the bonnet, but I'm prepared to see for myself and hold judgement.

I'm getting to like original cars more and more, but perhaps I'm not fully converted yet?

Don't forget the Polychromatic Green bodywork with Blaize Orange bumpers!

I guess that with any car like this there is a fair bit of romantic vision which puts the price up a bit. But it was also created by Mike Spence, had the magic BRM conection via the colour scheme and engine, and there were only 21 or so made. All adds to the fairy dust!

And all for the price of a standard Elan restored to a professional standard.

The prices I don't understand are for those cars associated with famous folks. Jim Clark's road going Lotus Cortina is currently for sale for......?250,000, or ?200,000 more than a normal car! . It is bog-standard, apart from having Elan diff and rear suspension grafted on the back, which would take a few days to copy.

What price one of Jim's Elans?

Priceless obviously..... I believe that Brian Buckland is driving one of Jimmy's Elan's to Donington, so that's something for us all to lust over on Saturday.

At last, a steady drip feed over the years and Alan begins to see the light! We'll get you there yet.
