I think not!

Apart from the intelligent reuse of a few off the shelf parts the Elan was a quantum leap in terms of design. Most cars (Brit' and US) were donkey carts in comparison.

So, whilst you grumpy old men have been grinding your organs I've found out several new and interesting things thanks to this thread...

One: Andy is a nice guy and he tells you what info he is able to supply before you part with your money.

Two: My collars match my cuffs and I do have the original engine.

Three: The reason my VIN plate did not have an engine number on it was because 36/7002 was supplied in component form and they won't have known which engine it was to be sent with when they scribbled the plate (and scribbled they truly did).

Andy was so prompt and helpful via email I might just buy one of the certs anyway.

Actually thinking a little ahead... given that Lotus may disappear up it's own tailpipe in a puff of Malaysian smoke the offer may not be there in perpetuity. ?25 now might be quite a bargain. When I have to sell my ba.., erm sorry nige <edit> John</edit>, little fella (no that's worse), pride and joy (to close to b**y), humpf. When I have to sell my car because the Euro has imploded and taken sterling with it then having a document that shows I have the original engine will add to the value. I'll get three extra magic beans at least.

Not sure what to think on this one. Andy and Harvey gave me all the info on Jason's certificate bar the invoice number in a couple of letters - for free. ?25 is a lot in comparison, but not that much compared to other administrative procedures. For example before knowing that Lotus could supply a 'certificat de conformit?' for free, the only alternative I had to registering my car was the FFVE (French historical vehicules association). They charge ?50 to give you a certificate repeating the information that you send them - their only check looking at the photo of the VIN plate they ask you to include! (Well, that's how it appears - and is kind of confirmed by the French registering authority who never check vehicle status in another country, presumably because they have no one who speaks another language).

So yes, the certificate appears expensive because all the info was freely supplied in letter form previously.

Like everyone else I found Andy very helpful. Even though the data is a bit scant - numbers, colour and who it was supplied as a kit to "South London Motors".
I phoned the last two owners, just getting the names from old registration documents.
The DVLA were pretty good and got me detail all the way back to the third owner.

My best bit of luck was that the second owner spotted the car at a Goodwood Breakfast meeting! I met up with him and he very kindly did a history of the car as he had it and shared several anecdotes and photographs about the car.

Now the only owner I haven't been able to find is the first owner....
