I thought Lotus still made the 26R? Where does Tony Thompson buy his genuine parts from otherwise?

From Shapecraft innit!

So I go away for a couple of days and come back to find you lot misbehaving!

Alan - Nope, not 200, but 79. See http://www.lotuselansprint.com/index.asp?pageid=41810 ... again!

John - I still maintain the Sprint was a distinct Elan type. For others who wish to see the - ehem! - definitive story, see http://www.lotuselansprint.com/index.asp?pageid=41809

This'll make for a good chat at Donington!

Were there ever any SUPERSPRINTS? I know of one being built if you are interested?

See you at Donington for a chat

SuperSprint is a scooter restoration company in Birmingham. An Elan with a SuperSprint sticker on the side may be mistaken for having a 200cc two stroke engine fitted. :D

Are you going to put a load of mirrors and a Vespa badge on the car to complete the look, Alan??!!

Hi Mark,
I didn't see your tall long shanks on Saturday or Sunday, was your head stuck under a bonnet searching for original dust from the factory?

At the moment I'm putting 2 of the Tex door mirrors on, as per the ones fitted to my +2, maybe a few more on long extension bars would look good, Tim will know and advise I'm sure.
Other nods to non originality will include a walnut dashboard with standard layout but with the inclusion of a gear shift light, the front bumper will be minus the chrome strip, the hood will be the canvas type (but with the correct frame you swapped for the CC wheel if you remember), the filler cap will be Monza style, the aforementioned stripes will be solid vinyl rather than the printed onto vinyl original pattern, wheels will be bolt on Minilites colour matched to the bumpers and stripes, oh and my doors will fit properly....

I will post a few pictures of things that caught my eye shortly, maybe here or on the Donington show post whichever I think is more appropriate.

Here is a view of Tony Penzato's BDG engined Sprint engine bay, apparently this built from scratch engine cost over ?30,000 and Tony states the car cost in excess of ?80,000 to build, he admits to getting carried away a little 8)

The car is for sale at ?70,000 and definitely comes into the HOW MUCH! category.

?37,950 for a FHC Sprint on Mr Matty's display area, according to Tim (nice to meet you at last) this is a perfect in every respect car just as it would have been when it first left the factory, he also mentioned that the final selling price would probably be lower than the sticker price.

It's originality including sticky out door bottoms is totally wasted on me. Mrs T found at least 6 paint flaws, a corroded chrome strip where the bumper meets the bodywork and quite a few other bits that didn't meet her expectations at this price level. Make your own minds up and comment accordingly, but this is the highest price for a standard FHC car with standard provenance that I have seen ( ie not owned by Graham Hill or Jim Clark etc).

PS: the stripes appear to be correctly applied

Starting to sound like a real cool car.

I think the value and let's face it, the practicality, of the car will be enhanced with a tow bar. If you need an idea of how to fix it, look at the pink Sprint that sold on Saturday. The other thing that occurs to me is that you may need extra instrumentation and I would recommend one of the binnacles that takes four additional dials. It will impress the hell out of any passengers brave enough to travel with you and look just fab.

You asked my advise on the mirror extension bars. They were never original and to be frank they would rather ruin the cool look described above.

I hope this helps and feel free to PM me if I can offer any other advice.

Tim

Tim,
A Tow Bar! fantastic idea as I have a Thule tow bar mounted bike carrier that I use on the Mini complete with number plate and repeater lights. Absolutely essential for camping trips I would have thought. Shame you don't like the wing mirror extensions idea, perhaps I will have a rethink on that one.

If you are fitting a tow bar, I think a trailer would be over the top but can I suggest a roof box.
Being plastic would be more in keeping with the lightweight Lotus philosophy.

Clive

P.S . Great to see all you folks at the Donington show. Thanks for calling by the stand and saying Hello

Alan, here's the trailer for you. 8) Under 400 lb and 9' long. If you fit the Elan you should fit the bunk. :) Even have a 42 inch model at 150 lb.

Stu,
That's great! There is a trailer similar to that parked down the road from my house on the beach, the guy is into original Mini's and one of those things is probably all he can tow, otherwise he could pull the rear subframe free of it's bolts on a quick getaway.

At the moment I'm just looking for a bike carrier or possibly a roof box that I can attach to the rollbar

I could always make one out of an M100, those things sell for about the price of a good trailer

From the other thread that started as an underinsurance thread we got on to the car being sold at the Goodwood auction - one of the last Sprints ever built with less than 1600 miles on the clock and purchased from the factorys own collection. This would seem to be the best possible provenance for the postioning of the Sprint stripes and to my mind looks spot on including the solid gold stripe finishing above the rear bumper (which it does not on the Sprint being sold by Matty).

Take a look: http://www.bonhams.com/eur/auction/19289/lot/286/
