Indeed they were.
However, as soon as the 1500 Cortina engine was affordable on the secondhand market it found it's way into many an Anglia.

I used to get a lift from work in an Anglia with a Twin Cam badge on the boot (Escort type) and a TC in the front. Geezer used it for 12 (edit: car) rallies and such; scared me to death. Must have been about 1969.

Yes around about that time a friend of mine had a genuine twin-cam Escort (not too many of those around) and I too was on the point of needing a change of foundation garments

Well the ride height looks to be correct!........ loadsamoney!
Seriously although the selling price seems high to what we are all used to it really only represents the cost of a proper rebuild. A +2 genuinely costs more than any Elan to rebuild properly and this is cheap compared to the Paul Matty S4 cars on sale recently.

Except that the car is now a two owner because it is the one Chris Evans bought and kept for two minutes.

And it was originally Roman Purple...a fab colour for a Plus 2! But I agree, the price is right as it would cost all of that and more to restore a tatty Plus 2 to that condition.
