I only ever saw one that I liked. It belonged to Fiona Richmond, one time Porn Queen, and she had it on the Primrose V12 E Type.

FU2. It captured her spirit perfectly!

I have EMA 7 K on my elan. Original plate. Once offered an insane amount for plate + car by an Ema Peel fan but could never part with her!

What about the status outside of the UK? How many people have personalized plates?

Here in the US, many states allow for personalized plates for a premium (usually up to 7 letters/digits) with the usual restrictions on possibly offensive words.

I have seen different variations on ELAN xx and xx ELAN. These are in the later style blue or white plates that came in the 70s and later.

Recently, California has allowed the reuse of what is called "black plate" plates, originally issued between 63-69. There is a thriving after market in matched sets of these plates, with prices up to at least $500. Premium prices seem to be for plates ending in 283, 289, 327, 409, 427, or 454 - obviously the muscle car crowd.

It would be interesting to come up with a black plate ELN xxx, ELA xxx, or even ELA 11x for your Elan. I went with a black plate Yxx xxx which is letter correct for the date of manufacture (1968) and first date of registration (1969) for my car.

USA specialized plates are obtainable for a slight extra fee. Virginia has the most "vanity" plates per capata than any other state, followed by California. There's a unique book available, "PL8SPK", totally written using only California BMV vanity plate registrations. Many humorous stories and fables... the book has metal front and back covers in the shape of license plates...
I don't understand the outrageous prices people pay for vanity license plates in other countries.

Used to have TYPE36 on the Elan but since changed to limited mileage club registration I had to give it up as in Australia you have special plates for this type of registration

Located in Iowa and a personal plate costs $25. We have a couple, MEMINI on a mini saloon, Type50 on a +2, PEELIN on a chrome orange Elise and LOTI 1 on an Elan.

At $25 it seems one can have some fun.

In another forum I frequent, there's a long-standing tradition of dredging up old threads, and adding to them so that the newcomers can get to play along.

This one is of some interest to me, as I have personalized plates on a few of my vehicles - both two and four wheeled.

Some of these might be a bit esoteric, but here goes:
