CHOLMONDELEY CASTLE PAGEANT OF POWER PICS!!

PostPost by: gordonlund » Tue Jul 21, 2009 9:02 pm

Hi all,

By popular request, here is my record of a glorious two days in wet north west of England with sunny spells.

For those of you with a mechanical bent I hope there is something for every one.

For me, I love 4 and two wheels as you may gather and the odd plane. Yes, I have a Haynes Workshop Manual for the Supermarine Spitfire on the bookshelf with all the Lotus and Classic Car / Bike books.

Not a house DIY book in the place!!
Only 10 max allowed I'll finish later.

David,

Manx Norton's never had disc brakes when new (original). There are firms in England who will build you a new Manx and obviously will put anything you want on it for a price and from that will sell a modern disc brake as well. Twin Leading Shoe Front (TLSF) drum brakes were standard and a firm called Tickle did a nice Four Leading Shoe conversion again a drum brake. Discs didn't really come into vogue on bikes until the mid 70's

Jaz

The V6 is in the Metro 6R4 on photo P7190184 in the next batch. Pity it was banned, they were getting a bit silly putting F1 engines into rally cars.

Did nobody recognise the H16 BRM on photo P7190152. If you want shivers down your spine look at that one in detail. I never heard it running at Chumly did any one?? I have only heard it on a recording with commentary by Stirling Moss and I can tell you it was awsome!! Stirling said that the only person who could get the best out that machine was Fangio, mainly because he did not have any fear of it and just rung its neck. It was too complicated to be a success though & suffered from lack of reliability.

Gordon,

That was only slightly tongue in cheek.

I was in Japan in the early '60s and thought of getting a G50 (the Manx was not really streetable), but wound up with a CB-77. Stock, it did 9000+ in top (almost 110 mph). Looking through the factory parts book got me un-obtanium (for the normal rider) clip-ons, rear sets, shift levers, light weight gas tank and seat, special close ratio gear sets (had to merge 4 different gears from 3 different models into the gear set and the factory did not tell anybody how to do it) (now you see where I developed my mania over gear ratios - I was doing this 40+ years ago) and finally one of 100 5-speeds produced (1.9 1st gear). Lots of parts deletes got me a light weight push start only bike). Coming back to the states I ported the cylinder head, got special light weight pistons, cams, carbs. I saw 11,500. It was an early pocket rocket and my daily drive for years, but went into vintage racing when I finally sold it. Back then, none of those parts were available, now everything and more is.

Every class of vintage racing (bike and car) is far superior to the best they could field back in the day.

Never seen a Manx with a cover over the primary chain before.
Your reference to the BRM H16 leaves me somewhat puzzled as I cannot see a photograph.

The H16 on the Hall & Hall "stand" certainly did not run (not convinced that it even can).

Finally found the other threads. Some good stuff there.
Check out Classic and Sportscar mag's next issue; didn't manage any Lotus shots this time. But.... not long to the Gold Cup.
