.... and then there is also the Matra museum where there lurks F1, F2 and Le Mans cars and that F1 chassised Renault espace thingy. There are also a few stripped down engines on display.

All the time playing in the background, there is a soundtrack of a matra V12 being put through its paces. I bought the CD and played it in the car going home - wicked!

Sad; but wicked. 8)

I think that the HSCC have one of their series events there (they certainly did this year) try their website for dates- might be posted by now.

Cheers,
Pete.

Looks like HSCC are not going this year. :(

Hi Hamish,
Call me sad as well if you like, the Matra V12 going down the Mulsanne straight is pure music, the bestest sounding engine in the whole World
Where can I get a copy of that CD from :?:

John,

Sorry just noticed your reply. At last someone just as sad as me!! :D

Send me your e-mail address and I'll send you the MP3 version of the file.

There are 4 different versions of the engine.

I'll also send a 5th track of an engine I believe to be the BRM H16. Now that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up!!

Hamish.

Hamish,
My son was given Nick Masons book "into the red" for xmas (which I have purloined). In the book is a cd which has the soundtrack of the cars featured in the book. This is real music. Among them is the BRM V16 (1953, 1490cc, 600bhp at 11,500revs) doing two laps of Donnington park. Indescribable!
I have a friend who worked on the car in the fifties and told me about testing it on the airfield near spalding, he actually has one of the pistons from an engine they threw away, it is about the size of an eggcup!
Wonderful stuff.
Chris

Chris,

Now, that's very interesting. The track I was given was titled BRM V16. I just took it that my friend didn't know any better and that it should have been titled BRM H16 because I distinctly remember a BRM H16 about the time of the engine size change in F1 in the 60s. I think that from this turmoil, the 3ltr Cossie DFV was born.
I didn't realise that BRM made a V16 as well. I know the H16 died a death because it was too complex and unreliable.

None the less, what a noise the thing makes. It's incredible. I played it on the hi fi and scared the shit out of the cat! :D :D

On the version I have, the engine blats (misses at high revs) a lot. It also sounds a real handful but I would have given my right arm to have been there. Wonder what the car was and who was driving it?

Hamish.

Hamish,
The car is probably the same one owned by Nick Mason. I think there are only three left and the other two are in the museum at Donnington.
The reason that the project was abandoned was that the technology of the day could not cope with fuel management and the electrical side of an engine like this. They had trouble getting it to run consistently at high revs.
The car is driven by Mark Hales in the cd.

One of the BRMs was at Shelsley Walsh last year. The guys running it had great trouble getting it running and it couldn't make it up the hill! It only seemed to have any power at higher revs, which on that engine is very high revs... I don't think it will ever make a good hill climb car... Great sound though.
