Valve spring compressor Sykes Pickavant

PostPost by: Andrewelan » Fri Jun 26, 2020 9:09 am

Does anyone have experience of this tool and its suitability for the twin-cam engine? My old one is OK for an A-series (Mini days!) but not an OHC engine with deep set valves

Many thanks

Thanks for that. I may have a offer to borrow one but great back up if it doesn’t suit. Cheers

The ones with the lever action are preferred. Once adjusted to suit the engine you just compress the valve spring using the lever. No need to turn screw threads for each valve.

No,
but this is not too bad and you can use it to change the Bendix on Starter Motor also.

I find the clamp version is more abrupt in use , there is less control -- especially on releasing tension whilst aligning the collects .

+1 for this one. Used on plenty of twincams. Easy enough to control without collets flying everywhere! Ok, it's not as quick to use as a lever type but I'm not pit crew trying to change valve springs in 5 minutes!! :-)

Ordered one this pm. Like you I’m happy to take a few minutes per valve. On the upside they’re only 8v heads! Could be worse!

I had no problem with an SP lever tool when I did some work 30 years ago - there is enough reach for inlets.
