Uninsulated spade crimp tool

Can anyone suggest where to obtain a set of crimping pliers suitable for 10mm uninsulated female spade connectors.

This size of spade is found on Elan wiring looms for the ignition circuit connectors.

I have searched the web, but only seem to be able to find pliers that crimp upto a maximum of 6.3mm spades ("generally" the most common size spade connector).

I'm looking for a "ratchet type" tool to do the job - but am I searching for the wrong type?

Any assistance or link to a suitable tool would be appreciated, thanks.

Timely post as I'm looking for a crimp tool as well. But 1006 of them to choose between is probably overkill. Problem - for me anyway - is that the functional difference between one costing £5 and £105 is not clear. I don't need one that'll last for 10yrs on a production line but it has to crimp my range of connectors (from 4mm to about 8mm) correctly, not just squash them.

Suggest try one of these.

Ratchet crimpers are always preferred

As 69S4 says,
I'm looking for a "budget priced' tool.

The old Kamasa tool I'm using at present does a first class job on 6.3mm female uninsulated spades, but obviously can't be used on the 9.5mm ones.

A point to note is, most sellers of these tools seem to reference the swg wire size thats going into the spade, rather than indicating the actual size of spade the can be accomadated in the jaws of the crimping tool - ( pretty useless reference methinks?)

Also, the tool I'm using for 6.3mm spades has a "W" shape on the receiving side of the jaw, this turns the 'ears' of the spade actually into the cable's insulation and core, not like the tools without this detail, that just have concave surfaces on each jaw and don't crimp the ears into the surface of the cable and core(this can't produce a very strong crimp - methinks also?)

Still looking for suggestions here in the UK, please?

Generally higher cost crimp tools are such they meet Quality Control requirements for manufactures working to specific and traceable quality standards of crimp.

Phil,

Why not pop into your local toolstation or screwfix maybe even machine mart and see one in your hand so as to speak.take some spades and wire with you they might let you try one.

My ratchet crimp tool has alternative jaws for insulated and un-insulated terminals. Works well, although not used a lot, I can't remember where I bought it, but probably Machine Mart, Amazon, Screwfix or Toolstation. I think it was around £20-30 2-3 years ago. I've got a couple of cheap non ratchet ones, but none work very well. If I can get out to the garage later I'll take a picture of it.

I can't find my crimping tool or where I bought it from at present. My garage is in a mess, I started to sort it out a year ago but came to a halt and not able to restart. I would definitely advise a crimping tool with interchangeable heads for insulated and non insulated wires.

Gents,

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.

Gray: All the ratchet type crimps with interchangable jaws that I have seen don't accomadate the 9.5mm female uninsulated spade size, I'd be interested in seeing what make yours is?? - are you sure you arn't getting mixed up with thinking that your crimp accepts the 6.3mm spade instead of the larger 9.5mm one???

RSVP with any other suggestions please gents.

It’s not usual to quote the size of the termination, most if not all crimp tools are concerned with the diameter of the portion to be crimped and the size of the cable.

Just had a look,Largest wire in my loom is 4.5mm including insulation.

Craven,

Thanks for your thoughts.

I agree that most crimps only reference the wire size applicable to each part of the jaws of the crimp however, they quote a range of wire that fits for sure, but only the exact size uninsulated terminal can be used - so why not quote that size, as opposed to the various wire sizes?

Nearly every other crimp sold references the terminal size - not the wire swg size!

Try to find one (like I have) that says "suitable for Non. Insl. 9.5mm spade" - if you find one, please let me know!

I don’t follow why you think a 9.5mm spade can only be terminating a single wire size, yes the spade is current rated but are used to connect less than maximum rated wires.
Hope you find what you need.
