4 speed gear selector nylon cup tool?

PostPost by: Grizzly » Mon May 28, 2018 5:04 pm

Hi all.

Is there a special tool to tighten the nylon cup that secures the gear selector on a 4 speed box?

I've tried a couple of different methods of tightening it but either can't get a big enough wrench in or damage the soft nylon, it's more of a pain now i have a solid gear selector but it makes me think there is a specific tool to do the job.

There is Chris. It is called a strong hand. That is all I have ever used and never had one come loose, so long as you have the rough grit washer in place.

I found it helpful to put a piece of nylon hose through the opening to take off the spring pressure , and as above tighten by hand.

Then deal with my grazed nuckles

Getting it on the threads isn't too bad but i was struggling to get it tight, since then i've been through my tool box and found an old oil filter strap wrench, using that i have got it reasonably tight without damaging it.

I made one years ago from an exhaust pipe adaptor (2 1/2"?) hammered into a roughly hex shape. With cross drilled holes off center for a long screwdriver lever (to allow room for the shift lever). Worked well enough for one removal and reinstall.
