Has anyone had experience with this type of tool and/or this one in particular? I would like to purchase one that would work for my Elan.

HI Chris

I have not used this tool but it should mount OK on the diff bearing split line and enable you to measure down to the pinion bearing. The standard Ford tools used something similar, with a special dummy pinon temporarily mounted in the bearings. However you can measure down to the bearing itself without the dummy pinon and calculate the required shim. The new Burton pinion and ring gear I recently got has the actual depth required etched on it. The original Ford ones had a +/- dimension from the standard depth marked on them with white marker.

If you have a true flat section of steel or aluminum plate and an accurate depth gauge of some sort it is easy enough to make something to span the bearing split line and measure down the depth. A bolt with a couple of large washers can be used to seat and lightly pre-load the pinion bearings when measuring the depth rather than using the Ford special dummy pinion.

Can anyone recommend a book or reference for setting up differentials.
Chris :)
