Koni inserts

PostPost by: nomad » Thu Mar 23, 2023 10:33 pm

I picked up some used Koni inserts a while back that were supposed to fit the rear struts on my S1. Trying to fit them now and it is obvious a special nut is needed to hold them in the struts. Also appears a sleeve to make sure they stay located correctly at the bottom might be a good idea also. Is this stuff available? Have I got the correct inserts? I see that a special nut on top of the shock will be needed to fit the lotocone correctly. I can make that. Do I need to make everything else???

I believe there should be a spacer of sort (ring) at the bottom holding the shock centered in the tube so that the oil is all around (helps dissipating the heat), and also making for the height required so that the top nut you're apparently missing clamps it down and prevents it to move within the tube.

Thank you!
I do not have a special nut to hold the strut in the tube or that spacer. I had assumed that the original nut for the top of the tube would work. Apparently not.
You wouldn't know a source??? :)

Here are the parts I was thinking of (I bought them used a while back, for a project) - the ring is not that critical ( mine is about 5.1 mm high, 5.4mm wide, ID 51mm, OD 61.8mm), the nut more difficult to replicate (I can check size and thread if you need, but I would rather fish for some...)

Thanks again!

The nut is what I need. The ring you show looks too big but I definitely get the idea. I will have to do some hunting rather than machining. I have my original nuts to determine thread pitch but hopefully I can find a source.

I sort of thought CeeJay had commented they are fairly standard gland nuts.
Do you have a suspension shop nearby? You could always call one of the large rebuilders, or Ken at DBean?

You may find that these parts are Ford based. The rear struts on an Elan look very much like an adaptation of Ford Anglia front struts. Visually these nuts look very similar to those on Ford Anglias, Cortinas, etc. Worth checking.

Well, as usual, you guys are coming up with good info. I've been busy today but plan on serious shopping on Monday. The main thing I need are the "gland" nuts at the top of the tubes. Everything else is an easy fabricate.
