Front Brake Flexibles

I ordered up some new braided brake flexibles for my Elan Sprint, these are not Goodridge hoses but ones they make up themselves.

The front hoses were too long by 2.75" and the ends were M10 x 1. I am going to send the lot back but the service was not good, they insisted that the M10 x 1 end threads were correct for a Sprint. My whole braking system is 3/8" UNF and to my knowledge this is correct. Thing is the rear flexibles they supplied were threaded 3/8" UNF, so they claim an original Sprint had 3/8" UNF at the back and M10 x1 at the front. Were any Elan Sprint's supplied like this?

I am losing the faith little with SJS over this incident since it involves braking components, shame since they are competitive and up to this point I valued their knowledge and service.

There is a reference (from Tim Engel) in the thread below about a change to metric. The parts manual also lists several generations of the calipers but doesn't specify what the changes were.

Not sure if this helps or not, but it does jog a memory about this issue coming up before.

So SJS did indicate there was a change on +2's and late Sprints. Just checked two other specialists and they are supplying 3/8" UNF for everything.

I think SJS supplied the front flexibles for a +2 in error which was too long and had metric ends.

Hi Roland

The brake calipers on my late Plus 2S 130 do indeed have metric threads but there is a small piece of ridged pipe which is an adapter from male M10 to female 3/8" UNF. So, all the brake pipes thereafter on the rest of the car, including the flexibles, are 3/8" UNF.

I suppose it might be possible to go straight into the caliper with a metric thread on the flexible but it would have to have imperial on the other end to match up with the rest of the brake system including the master cylinder, servo and rear calipers which are all imperial

Andy,

I have exactly the same short pipe from the Caliper (not checked in the caliper is metric) to a 3/8" UNF union to the flexible. Fitting at the other end of the flexible is also 3/8" UNF.

The guys at SJS know the arrangement but insist M10 at the end of the flexible is correct. They make these hoses themselves and state they have sold loads, I can't see they are correct.

I am going to get a set of proper Goodridge hoses, I understand they have 3/8" UNF at each end from my investigations today. I've sent an e mail to Sue Miller this evening and will be happy to buy from her.

A set of Goodridge hoses were received from Sue Miller yesterday on account so I can check them. She had them in stock for a while so she will charge me based on her original stock price.

The hoses fit perfectly and they have the correct 3/8” UNF ends. I spent a whole week messing around with SJ posting stuff backwards and forwards. I generally don’t use Sue for spares because she doesn’t have a online system, which in hindsight is not a good reason. I shall start to use her services more since she understands customer service.
