+2 ball joints torn rubbers

PostPost by: rdssdi » Fri Mar 12, 2021 7:22 pm

Have my +2 on jack stands. Front suspension in full droop. Noticed ball joint rubbers are torn. The rubbers are pinched when at full droop. Spyder chassis and a-arms. Original uprights. Problem? I assume normal.

If I replace the ball joints it will tear the rubbers again. Any advice. Thanks. Bob

Is it both sides then?

Good question. I believe so. The left side is easy to see. I will take a look. Certainly both appear to be in a very "angled". I will post photos later.

A shot in the dark here but do you have poly wishbone bushes? The original rubber bushes limit the suspension droop but poly bushes don't as far as I know .. could that be why your ball joint rubbers are getting pinched?
Just a thought.

No poly bushes. I will get a replacement ball joint. When I have the old ball joint removed I will inspect to see if there is something causing it. If nothing obvious I will replace the ball joint and see what happens.

Potentially the shocks being used have longer droop travel than the original ones leading to this excessive angle and pinching. The preload on the springs will push the shocks to maximum droop regardless of poly or rubber bushes I believe.
