Brake pads

Hi

I’m looking for a pad set for my elan. Is only ebc black or green stuff the alternative?
I think the problem is with the rear pads. The front pads are common to other classic cars.

Cheers

Diego

I may be wrong again, I think the rear pin distance is common to many Volvo Saab etc. The only difference is the width, so you need to grind a 1/16th off. Think the thickness is fine.

As for the fronts, I use Mintex 1144 pads, a great improvement on the EBC pads previously fitted to my type 26. They are available from Merlin Motorsport at Castle Combe who do mail order, and other places as well I'm sure.

Mintex 1144, very good pad. I personally use Ferodo DS2500 on my Alfa, and will be fitting them to my Elan as soon as it needs some new ones. Not cheap but after trying most others, I like those the best.
Of course that's if you are a spirited driver and maybe want to do track days.
If you just want some pads for the road, then pukka Girling, Mintex, or Ferodo road equivalents are more than good enough..
I should say I'm not a lover of EBC stuff, just my own opinion.

I recently changed the front pads on my S3 DHC from EBC to Mintex 1144 and have found the Mintex to be far superior with better feel and progression. My car does not have a servo so you have to press a bit harder than you would in a modern but it still stops on a sixpence.
I got them form Merlin Motorsport at Castle Combe whom I have always found to be helpful, knowledgeable and efficient.

Ferodo DS2500's pt number is FCP809H, Demon Tweeks have them on offer right now,:-

Ignore the generic picture.

They also have Mintex 1144's on offer for the P14 Girling Caliper, at half the Ferodo price at the moment:-

Thanks very much. I use Pagid Blacks & Greys on my unservoed Caterham which has a slightly larger m/c and large AP 4 pot calipers. How do you find the DS2500s in the Elan calipers in terms of cold bite and modulation?

Can't say for the Elan yet, but have used them extensively on 3 Alfa 105's now, currently on my '63 Giulia Ti Super Rep (saloon). I have done over 4000 miles on the DS2500's, and they've been perfect. The car is light for an Alfa (around 900kgs), , and has a "warm" 2 litre engine. That 4000 miles has included 3 days at Donington with track time, and two trips to Classic Le Mans. I drive spiritedly, and so far can't tell that they've worn much, not even 1/8".
There's also none of the "straight on at T junction" until they get warm. Never made them fade, even when on the hottest laps.
They're perfect from cold, unlike the old DS11's I used to use in the 70's - 90's when rallying.
Granted the Lotus is much lighter, but also has a much smaller pad area. I fully expect that they would perform just the same on my S3.
At the moment, and having tried most of the other suspects over 40+ years of competition, I wouldn't use anything else for a fast road, occasional trackday pad. This is a personal view obviously.

Does your Alfa have brake servos fitted?

Hi again, yes, a single remote servo. (as does my Elan S3).

I have used the DS2500 ( and the DS2000 before that) on my unboosted S4 Elan when it was more of a road car and on my boosted Plus 2 and they are my preferred Lotus road pad. Also works well on the track in most circumstances, certainly good enough for track days if not endurance racing on demanding braking circuits.

cheers

May I ask if these are available for the Girling 16P/ +2 front brakes ? If so, can someone provide the article ID ?
I looked around and found only Girling 14 pads on offer.
Thanks

Have a look at other cars which used the P16 caliper, eg Cortina GT Mk1 & 2, Escort Mk1 Mexico, TC & RS1600 etc. They may not be listed for an Elan +2, but surely must be for the Fords. Just make sure you specify P16, and not the later M16, as they are different pads.
