Girling or lockheed servo.

Good evening,

The next stage of my S3 SE rebuild is the brake servo, which I wish to retain. Although the original Girling looks to be in good condition, it still needs a service. This would not be an issue for me, other than I can purchase a new Lockheed 1.9 boost servo for the same cost as the refurb kit for the Girling!

Has anyone fitted the Lockheed servo and experienced any issues? I realise I would need a new mounting bracket and the "plumbing" would be slightly different.

Years ago I tried refurbing my girling unit with an overhaul kit, it never worked so I bought a Lockheed unit, simple fit very similar to the girling and works well

If it's an original girling unit then I'd pay for it to be remanufactured by someone such as Classic car brakes.(c?200 I think)
They do a great job with new stainless steel sleeving to restore virtually anything.
Many years ago my original servo packed up and I threw it away and replaced it with a slightly larger girling unit (but same pressure) from a scrapped Escort.
Recently I thought about getting an original sized servo until I saw what they cost!
So hang onto the original - however I do have a new Lockheed servo available if you want to go down that route.

I don't think it is the original unit, as it is a mk2b, with a metal bayonet ring holding the tank together. I guess the car (1966 build) would originally have had the earlier mk2a. However ?200 is still over twice the purchase price of a new Lockheed unit at approx ?90.

@Concrete-crusher. Are you happy with the performance of the Lockheed servo. Is the brake feel the same as with the Girling unit?

If you do decide on Lockheed I'm open to offers on the one I bought but didn't install.

I'm not sure when the changeover to 2b occurred - yours could be original.
Replacement 2as are like hen's teeth but 2bs are still worth keeping.
Mine was the small diameter and I've ended up with the bigger one - same boost as that's determined by the cylinder ratio.
