Veg, Bob Wagner at Bob Wagner Motorsports in Decatur did mine. The bearings had to be cut out.
PM me for his contact details, if you wish.

Greg, Bob is the old race mechanic I mentioned. Frank introduced me when I needed the threaded tubes welded on.

More heat and a few good whacks and I managed to get the shaft and bearings removed. Rust does indeed seem to have been the culprit, and there was a coating of it on the shaft between the bearings although both ends were free of it. The inner bearing is still quite well stuck on the shaft but that will be a project for next weekend.

After getting the inner bearing on I noticed that it has a short spigot on one side, which is the side facing the dust shield. Before I assemble any further, is this the right way or the wrong way? I can't tell from the bits of the old bearing which way it was oriented.

Short side against dust shield. Issue 18 upright.

So I've got it on backwards then?

Almost a whole book written on this subject on this site. If the bearing is fitted with the wide side to spider/dust shield you will have the frustration of getting it all back together only to find the brake disc in the wrong place.

Yes, that is the picture I took showing the old driveshaft with bearing in situ. A very long thread indeed...
