Digging in the garage, I found to my surprise two new Armstrong blue front damper assemblies and a pair of two rear Armstrong red dampers. New, no corrosion, still in their original boxes. Question - are they combineable and would it make sense to give them a try?
 - like ol' stuff

That's a turn of good fortune.. they are supposedly like hen's teeth and I've read many comments that say they are superior in this application than modern units.

Definitely try the fronts (easier to fit?)

You are very lucky, give them a try back and front. Are you sure for the rear they are not the best of all "Koni"
I suggest you keep them vertical now all the time and try to move them a few strokes.
I would also leave them adjusted as they are and not fiddle with them

Nice to hear all this. The rear red ones are in Original Armstrong boxes which say: Armstrong red, for Elan :D . Little leaflet and topnuts included!
Like hen's teeth!

Great find Anna. Most likely to replicate the original feel, ride and road holding of the Elan, given the remainder of the drivetrain is original.

Do please post pictures, I'd like to see the boxes and leaflet.

Anna,

Please post a picture. I have an old pair of Armstrong shocks I bought to use for color and the sticker that was on them. I painted my front Konis blue and had new stickers made. I'm not sure if the Armstrong shocks that Lotus used original had the stickers on them or not.
