To avoid damaging the thread on the shaft I removed the nut completely and cut a piece of steel tube to fit over the thread and sit on the shoulder at the end of the taper, same length as the thread so the spacer sits on both and spreads the load .... if that makes sense. Then, as Alan says, the spacer needs to be just long enough to stop the spinner bottoming on it's thread. I don't think you need to worry about damaging the spinner threads but you are very likely to deform the end of the spinner itself. Mine was certainly a bit less concave afterwards but it was simple to reshape it using a suitably large ball bearing in the vice.

Andy I have a similar one you can borrow, but don?t know if hub/nut sizes for a +2 are the same size as that for my Sprint.

My 72 S130 4 speed has a galvanised chassis fitted circa 1983. Now completely stripped for restoration. The chassis is in remarkably good condition showing just a little surface corrosion where the felt saddle fits against the body. I suspect this is due to the felt retaining moisture so will replace with foam rubber on rebuild.

The chassis was painted Lotus black which had bubbled and lifted where surface corrosion had occurred. All black paint stripped using a hot air gun and scraper, surface corrosion removed using light wire brushing and damaged areas painted using Ambersil 'cold galvanising' paint. The chassis was then repainted gray using Hammerite Straight to galvanising paint. All of my research suggests that painting galvanising is only a problem if it is 'new' galvanising, ie less than 12 months old.

It looks like it doesn't really need paint but I prefer the gray colour to the bare galvanising or black.

I had a hub removal tool made with a centre point to engage in the shaft and a flt rear end so it bore on the outer edge of the spinner.
It didn't cost that much (c?10) as the machining is so simple.

Thats true but with all the engine oil soaked into the carpet i think the small wheels would turn ok

You'll be fine .... just don't use shagpile carpet
