To avoid damaging the thread on the shaft I removed the nut completely and cut a piece of steel tube to fit over the thread and sit on the shoulder at the end of the taper, same length as the thread so the spacer sits on both and spreads the load .... if that makes sense. Then, as Alan says, the spacer needs to be just long enough to stop the spinner bottoming on it's thread. I don't think you need to worry about damaging the spinner threads but you are very likely to deform the end of the spinner itself. Mine was certainly a bit less concave afterwards but it was simple to reshape it using a suitably large ball bearing in the vice.
