Plus 2 shock absorbers / dampers

PostPost by: Cymru » Fri Jan 05, 2018 2:45 am

Hi all,

Looking for some advice on shock absorbers / dampers.

I need to change front and back.

Not looking for track quality, but would like to be able to adjust return rate and ride hight.

Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

I would recommend TTR adjustable spring dampers at the front and his Koni inserts at the back.

You will need to modify your Chapman struts to make the rear height adjustable by fitting threaded spring perches - however this involves chopping off the existing spring pans which you may not want to do.

I also fitted TTR front adjustable units that I got from Sue Miller, but I fitted GAZ rear shocks that adjust via a small square lug at the very top. I set mine about six turns each, and all good, but these won't let you adjust the ride height :(

..don't use AVO inserts as sold by Kelvedon.

They are crap and AVO are rude when you ring them asking any questions about set up (Kelvedon aren't rude when you ask them, simply refer you to AVO!).

What was it that Colin said ?

Oh yes....

"Make the suspension adjustable and they will adjust it wrong -- look what they can do to a Weber carburetor in just a few moments of stupidity with a screwdriver."

For rear replacements I went with AVO from Dave Bean. Seem OK, but no miles on them yet as laid up for winter. I think Ray supplies AVO now as well. Interestingly, Bean?s told me they are the same rear insert callup for the Elan and the Plus 2.

i will be looking at changing my +2 shocks and springs...bushings etc. Have the Koni Square D. So I will most likely rebuild them like Dr Colonel CeeJay shows in one of his links
So it must be the coils that are different rates. and I will most likely replace with the original lotus coils for now. Recommendations as to manufacturers please.

sure I have read the rear coils compress, and strut assembly lowers out

I've got GAZ rears and I'm happy with them. The lack of height adjustment didn't bother me and it sits well.

On the fronts I have whatever SJ Sportscars sell. Seem pretty nice, height and dampening adjustable.

Happy with both, and compared to my shagged old suspension it handles wonderfully and very comfortable - much more comfy than my old Exige!
