Hi,
A search failed to turn up an answer to my question so, I seem to remember that the driver side spring lengths are about .5" longer than passenger side to allow for driver weight. Is this correct or a figment of my imagination?

I thinks that's incorrect.
The workshop manual does refer to longer front springs being available to increase the front ride height for certain markets - maybe that's what you are thinking about ? They were 0.67" longer than standard and to be fitted as a pair. Possibly the headlamps were too low to meet legal requirements in certain countries.

I think you are partially correct. If I remember correctly I read a magazine article in the 1960's that said the early Lotus Cortina competition cars had this feature.
