+2 Handbrake adjuster won't screw back in

I made the stupid mistake of screwing the handbrake adjuster by the rear right engine mount, all the way out after I forgot to take the h/brake off one day. After about half an hour scrabbling around under the car I'm no nearer being able to get the thing back in. Does anyone have any tips?

I don't recall any difficulty with this.
Did you try with the handbrake lever in the cabin, both on and off?
Try using a nylon or leather strap to pull the two halves of the handbrake caliper together.
Are your handbrake pads out of place, they should be hooked over a round bar near the top.

It has a fine thread and is difficult to access...the only advice I can give is make sure it is aligned properly and have patience....

It's even a bit more difficult if you put the recommended compression spring on the bolt, between the swinging pads.

unhook the cable inner from the lever arm next to the diff. Screw back in place the cable adjuster and cable outer at the front all the way in. Then hook the cable back to the lever arm at the rear. Then adjust the cable outer to tension the cable the correct amount.

Finally got the adjuster back in after following Rohan's advice. The issue was the tight angle of the outer cable which was causing the mis-alignment. I don't have a pit so have the front end on blocks of wood to give me some room whilst I scrabble about. I remember adjusting the cable on my Pug 306, you could do it sitting in the driver's seat! Perhaps that's 30 years progression!
