I am getting ready to install new rear wheel bearings in a 1967 S3. in research I see reference to an inner bearing shield. As there was nothing like this on disassembly can someone shed some light on it?

Thanks,

A thin aluminium alloy shielded made from about 1mm thick sheet fits between the bearing and the retaining circlip of the inner bearing.

Thanks Rohan. Are these available or does one have to fabricate them?

Note they were only used on the wider inner bearing later rear strut ( issue 18) not the early issue 16 strut that used 2 narrower 6206 bearings. So check which your car has

Thank all. I have Issue 16 so no problems. I did notice one of the bearings had a very thin piece of brass shim behind it. Poorly made. Is this a common correction to tighten up a loose bearing?
