Triumph steering column

Spoke to Moto-Lita to confirm the column on my early +2 is a Triumph column. The boss that fits their steering wheel is a B20.

The early plus two used a ford based non collapsable column which your photo appears to show. The Triumph based column should have two stalks for lights and indicators, the Ford uses just one.

Brian, my column is indeed non collapsible with one indicator/horn stalk. Am I then correct to say the Ford and Triumph columns are both 36 splines with a 5/8" spline diameter?

I'd have to dig one out and measure it, but I am pretty sure the Triumph based column is 9/16" diam.

Hi,
Triumph used this column ( top ) in later models, it has a larger top portion at 7/8 inch with a 3 / 4 lower, also has larger steering wheel spline at 3 / 4 x 48 against the 5/8 x 36 of an Elan wheel. Likely increase in top section diameter to accommodate steering lock.

Les, my Triumph column measured up at 15.625mm and has 36 splines. As Ron has illustrated above, the late 1500 spitfire uses a different upper column (and Dolomite style column stalks)see http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID005793 .

Hi Les,
Probably water under the bridge now, but this is a pic of a boss from to Moto-Lita wheel once fitted to a 1967 Elan. Column size 5/8 inch X 36 spline. Only identifier, hopes you can make it out, is the 29 on underside.

The plan is to go to Moss Europe, 15% sale at moment to buy Moto-Lita steering wheel and boss. I spoke to them and if the boss does not fit I can get a full refund. Tried a steering wheel from my brothers Piper P2 which has a Triumph column/rack, his wheel fitted perfectly. Will update Friday.
Thanks again, Les

Just an update. Went to Moss, bought the steering wheel and the B20 boss fits just as Moto-Lita said, just need to change the Triumph badge to Lotus. Next task is refit the dash.
Thanks again, Les
