I've just painted one of my wheels with Rustoleum hard hat 2115 and although the finish is nice and 'satin' is this correct, or were they originally shiny? If so, maybe a clear coat to make them shine?

I should say that hard hat 2115 is silver / aluminium (early Plus 2).

I always have powder coat done in a silver semi/mat finish. Comes out perfect every time.

If the wheels are chrome and there is no rust or bubbling, a shot blast with a mild to medium grit and powder coat.

I'm usually against rattle cans.........but I have found that Rustoleum is a good product.

Nice wheels G!
This is how silver, my silver wheels are
I quite like the satin look but were they satin originally or shiny?
Wow, that rustoleum comes out the can heavy! I bought 3 cans to do 5 wheels but I don't think it will take half of that.

Kev,

My car is a 1968 S4 Elan. It was 10 years old when I got it and the wheels had a satin finish in silver. I think this is how it left the factory, but it had several owners before I got it, so it could have been altered. I have powder coated in the same colour and finish.

Robinshaw and Ross in their book "Authentic Lotus elan and Plus 2" at page 175 say that the the wheel centre should be satin matt black rather than glossy. British +2's apparently had the outer rim chromed which, to me, looks terrific and eliminates the need for the beauty rings or "rim embellishers" as the British call them. This would be a pricey wheel indeed if you could find a professional to do them up for you.

Lee,
chrome rim and black centres came in later.....
Originally they were silver
Then the rimbelisher
Then the chrome rim

Looks great.

I just did mine last week and made a complete ba**s of it. Got the wrong Rustoleum product - 2117 Galva Zinc.

Damn stuff is a dirt magnet and glittery to boot. I ended up overspraying the result with Simoniz Wheel Silver.

Still not great - but I don't have time to restrip.

Next time I will be more careful
