Lotocone And Cones

Happy 2004!
Started the new year with the reassembly of the rear suspension, and
have become confused!
when I pulled the rear strut from the lotocone during diassembly a
steel cone fell out. Should this have happened?
Now I am reassembling I cant work out what holds the strut to the
chassis tower. I haven't got the castellated nut yet (long story) but
as far as I can see when the nut is on it will just pull the cone out
and fall apart?
