Making adjustable control arms

PostPost by: mr.vman » Mon Jul 14, 2014 2:44 am

Several of us have been considering making adjustable control arms for the classic Lotus range (Elan, Elan+2, and Europa) for some time. We are making fixtures for adjustable upper arms, that can use Lotus rubber bushings (Metalastic), or? Adjustable for Caster and camber. Adjustable lower rear arms, adjustable for camber and toe. The parts will be made in the USA. I am aware of adjustable arms, that have been, and are available, in the UK. At this point, curious if there is interest in adjustable arms for sale. If nothing else, I will have a set of adjustable arms for my cars and friends. Not sure that Lotus owners understand how important wheel alignment angles are, to the handling of the car. The fabricator I am using is intrigued by Lotus, he can do most fabricated parts on a Lotus. Arms, exhaust systems, headers, he is ready to go.
Not ready to start taking orders yet, more on that later if, there is a need. Is there any interest for these parts in the lotus world? Or something else we should consider?

Steve,

An absolutely standard car in original condition probably is not a candidate for this.

But, over the years, changes, replacements, repairs, different wheels and/or t(y)res, and other occurrences could allow for the possibility that adjustments would improve the handling and steering feel and precision of the car.

If the replacements are reasonably price competitive, and come with comprehensive fitment and adjustment instructions, you may find a reasonable market.

David,
Thanks for the reply. The plan is to make the parts competitive in quality and price. When talking to other Lotus owners, many have never done a four wheel alignment. Or, even checked for worn parts. Too me, Lotus is about the handling, hence adjustable arms.

Stuart, thanks for reading the post. The plan is to post pictures and results, when I install the adjustable arms on my +2. I have through the years, been making my own. Now it is time to try to make several for sale. I doubt this will be a money maker. Could be a worthy endeavor. Will take time, to get fixtures made. Should have the first fixture made next week for lower arms. If all goes well. The fabricator wants to make them in stainless, so they can be beautiful. I am staying with mild steel, unless someone wants stainless, when we get going. I might be looking for Elan upper arms and rear arms, to use as patterns. I have arm patterns for; +2 and Europa. The good news for us in the Lotus world is, the fabricator is ready to make anything needed. This includes exhaust headers and systems. Not limited to the Elan and Europa. Need something for a seven?
