TroonSprint wrote:I think the cast support in your picture could bolt directly to the bracket on my steering lock instead of to the U-clamp. It seems to be at about the right distance from the steering wheel. Here is a close up of the bracket which is clamped round the steering lock assembly. Can you measure the width across the bolt holes on the casting, then I could see if the spacing is the same as on my bracket.
Mike

It's extremely difficult to measure installed, but the width centre to centre is approximately 2", the U clamp is about 1 3/4" behind the dash.

See previous post

Many thanks,

There's no real way to do that with everything assembled, bearing in mind that the steering column is not horizontal.

I's suggest either get hold of a used bracket (have you tried JAE or WireWheel?) or have someone that has a car in pieces measure the die cast bracket.

OK Phil. Thanks for looking. I guessed it would be just about impossible to measure in situ. The width centre of the bracket on my column is 1 & 3/4 inch.

It could be 1 3/4"... I was trying to measure across the bottom of the "U" with wires hanging down etc etc.

Anyone got a die cast steering bracket that you could measure for Mike?

Or even better laser scan then stereolithography (additive machining) to make a copy; you can get all sorts of materials now, not just wax/plastics.

Or even better, has anyone got a spare off a wrecked car, preferably in the UK? Are there any Lotus dismantlers in the UK? I know of MG dismantlers, but haven't heard of anyone doing the same for Lotus.

This is how I found my "original" column...all the rework was covered by black insulation tape!!!
I have not asked the original owner.... yet.
