Plus 2 tyres in the UK for normal road use?

PostPost by: Johnfm » Tue Nov 26, 2013 10:49 am

Lots of archive stuff about 'sticy rubber' adn ?150 Michelin XAS tyres etc.

For those wanting a normal road tyre for the knock off steel wheel in standard size (I guess 165/70/13) what are the sensible options ( ie not Korean ditchfinders and not unobtanium Megasoftygrip)?

For UK owners (as the Americans don't use tyres anyway ;))

Im on Kumho Solus kh17 175/70/R13

they seem very good.....Ive pushed them and they've delivered what was asked of them
Ive never tracked the car so don't know how they behave if abused but the spirited driving I like, the tyre has performed well indeed......
also I have very little wet miles on them but the few I have done again they've performed well and the stopping distance was quite impressive.......(stopping a lot sooner than the goodyear gt3s I had on my last +2)

I swapped the original tyres off the car as they were the Dunlop sports and I think looking at them they were fitted in about 1973

Cheers

Do the modern tyres look a bit 'odd' on these classics?

The previous owner left on a set of 11 year old Dunlops.

No wear (it hardly did any miles) - but I can fairly easily lock the brakes, so not exactly the grippiest things since sliced bread.

Are they the standard steelies with the inner bits painted black? They look 'deeper' dish than standard.

I can recommend these, great tyres and have the look of a "classic" tread.
Vredestien Sprint 165/80 R13. (correct size).
Good standard sporty tyre, lots of grip.

Here's a selection for you to choose from on Vintage tyres - (inc the Vredestein)

I also got some inner tubes (who else uses inner tubes on here?)

What's the opininion on sizes?

This thread alone has two different sizes mentioned:

165/80/13
175/70/13

and my car has 165/70/13 on it.

I am tempted to try the 175/70/13.

there have been many threads on this.....
the sizes I have heard mention of were 165, 175 and 185.....
the ones on the car when I got it were 165.....they were terrible...(although it was age related as they were rock hard)....I also decided that there was a greater choice in he 175.........after all that I wasn't sure so went down the middle.......
Im happy at 175......it doesn't interfere with anything....doesn't rub the body.....doesn't touch the suspension through full travel..........

then usually gets thrown into the mix is the rim diameter.......some people opting for the 14" minilites......

Uniroyal RainExperts! Great tyre at a realistic price. Uniroyal is part of the Continental group.
