Hi Can anybody recommend a UK company that overhauls the girling brake calipers.

I have a 1969 Elan s4

Or is it a simple job to DIY , are there any videos about showing how its done.

Thanks Steve

Am in the middle of doing it myself at the minute. Not a hard job, just a lot of time cleaning and fiddling. My calipers weren't that bad and was looking at $900+ to get them done if they need new pistons(they getting them) all round and painting.

I didn't think any of the prices quoted were that bad it's just when you added it all up.

Am doing it for about $200, the finish won't be as good but much better price. If the calipers were in worse condition it might have been worth paying the money.

Basically get a quote and unless your very uncomfortable with it get them to do it.

I just did all four. Took apart, clean, new ss pistons, boots, don't forget the tiny rubber ring between the halves.
Now if they don't leak when I fill the system.......I'm good.

Click this link for an example of Classicar's work.

And they are nowhere near as expensive as your firm in Texas. I don't know how they do it at their price; the new parts cost about that much anyway.

I, too, highly recommend Classicar Automotive. One of my calipers had seized and when they rebuilt the two one of the caliper halves was cracked so they replaced it with no extra charge. Brian Buckland's book recommends them and that was good enough for me! Cost of the refurbishment was double-digit ?. It cost me as much again for shipping from and to Ireland from the UK. My total cost including all shipping was less than ?200 for the pair. :D :D :D

I have sent loads of stuff to classicarautomotive - worth every penny.

For the front callipers just do it - anything else is a waste of time and money.

The rears are a bit different - they are a bit pricey and easy enough to do yourself if you want to save a couple of hundred quid. New pistons and seals and a coat of calliper paint - Quite straight forward.

There are details of rebuilding on this site.

I recently had all four of mine done by classic car automotive. I found them to be very helpful and accommodating. I'm over here in Ireland but managed to drop them off in Chelford on my way across to a wedding. My wife was curious why we weren't taking the motorway and what were the contents of that rather heavy box that was in the boot! My handbrake linkages were shot so I had to get new ones from Kelvedon motors. Lee was impressed by the quality of the castings but found that the holes to be too small. They have a good relationship with Kelvedon so I think he fed the info back to them. The price, including shipping to Ireland, was very reasonable. They forgot to put the handbrake pads in with the calipers. However, Lee sent them on afterwards free of charge. I won't put up any photos as Bill's photos say it all. I think it was him as well that said it was like Christmas when they arrive!

All the best,

Pete

Great discussion on calipers. :)

What pads are you (and anyone else) running? With or without boosters in place?

Thanks . . .

Randy

EBC Green Stuff on the front. Std on the rear. No booster - removed it a couple of years ago.

cheap pads with a servo - I haven't had the need for anything more exotic or technical.
