Modern synthetics and mineral oils are no longer a single grade. Typically they are quoted as a 75w/90 or 85w/90. These give superior low temperature protection while still maintaining the needed high temperature properties. You will struggle to find a true single grade EP 90 oil today. The "EP" rating has been replaced by a "GL" classification. traditional EP oils are either GL4 or GL5 in todays terms.

The GL rating is significant for our cars - GL4 for gear boxes in an Elan and GL5 for the diff. This is a measure of the oils ability to lubricate in sliding contact which is much higher in the hypoid diff than in the helical gearbox. GL5 in the gear box you don't want as it over lubricates the sliding contact in the synchroniser rings and reduces their performance where you do want it n the diff as it lubricates the hypoid gears the best.

If you want to buy gear oils and want to understand the issues then read the Redline web site and then make your choice.

SmBarron,

Many Porsche guys.....guess that is me, and we are a picky bunch.....use Swepco 201. I use it in the Tiger, Boss 302's, P cars and Lotus.
I just have it shipped to the house from :

SMBarron,

I have never had issues as a result of using redline , it is widely available in the US I have even seen at NAPA.

Certain modern gear oil's are hard on brass component's such as syncro rings or brass bearing carrier's. I would have to read up on that again but trying to match original spec's is a good idea.

Traditional EP formulations had high sulphur levels which gave the oil its EP = extreme pressure lubrication properties, you could smell the sulphur in the oil. Modern GL-4 synthetic gear oils have typically much lower levels of sulphur despite their generally better EP characteristics. Modern GL-5 oils have somewhat higher levels of Sulphur depending on the maker to meet the GL-5 specification.
