Not wishing to appear think but can you please tell me what a slide hammer is as I've not come across that name before.

Basically a rod with a stop on it and a heavy weight with a hole in it so that the weight slides on the rod. At the end opposite the stop a thread onto which you can fasten various adaptors.

You fasten it to the object you want to pull & then slide the weight hard against the stop.

Allan,

Thanks, I'll follow your separate restoration thread. I'm glad that you brought this up about the pin removal. I don't think it has been covered before with pictures.

It will help a lot to have the calipers split when you are cleaning and rebuilding. The instructions in Brian Buckland's book helped me with the rebuild.

Slide hammers are available in many sizes. Here is a demonstration with a fairly large slide hammer:

Thanks Russ. I've got the picture as they say. That's a beast of a slide hammer.

One more vote for the slide hammer!!

At first I was foxed by how to remove the pivot pins, but thankfully searched for & found this thread!

I first tried the screw/spacer/washer method; took me an hour to remove the first pin; stripped two screws on the 2nd pin & could not shift it!

then a friend offered a slide hammer:

Removed the other 3 pins in 5 minutes!! :D
