I just spent a couple of days wire brushing and priming my old steel wheels, luckily found an old Ikea sink as a wheel mask!
Anyway wheels as follows
No 1 - OK
No 2 - OK
No 3 - Peg holes slightly enlarged
No 4 - Rim welded + large dent
No 5 - Peg holes very enlarged

The question is what is acceptable, also I am going to be using TTR rear UJs , would alloys be better suited?

Welding to rim

P1010212.JPG and
Dent

P1010213.JPG and
Large holes

P1010214.JPG and
OK Wheel?

Any advice gratefully sought!

Thanks

Before you do anything else, take them to a tyre place and see if they run true and are within balancing limits - if not you are wasting time.

Chances are that if it is welded or bent it is worse than you think - I've got a perfectly restored wheel that is egg shaped!

I was wasting my time as I went to our local tyre fitter and all could not be balanced :(
So its TTR after all

George, don't you appreciate sound advice (like that from AHM)?

George,

There are some wheel specialists who can straighten steel wheels if they are bent. The downside is further investment with no guarantee of success. I had my K/O wheels straightened many years ago. They were much easier to balance after that, but the wobble eventually returned. I replaced with panasports.

Regards,
Dan

You can rebuild steel wheels, a friend rebushed the holes then replaced the outer rims with new ones which he bought from Germany, they are like new and are probably truer than original. Not a cheap way to go but still an option.

Thanks to all. The thing is I don't think my French tyre fitter tried particularly hard to balance the wheels. I think he only tried two and then gave up. His comment was that they would require a lot of weights mmmmmmmmmmmm So I don't think they are that bad.
Having said that we do want the car to be very usable so have ordered a set of Minilites from TTR.
My steel wheels will be sold in due course
