What tools and spares are in your boot/trunk

I just had a sort out through the boot of my elan apart from the normal jack and handle, I have socket set, huge bag of tools, tool box with distributer plus leads cap points plugs brake fluid. What do you guys carry?

In both my Plus 2 and S1 Esprit I just carry the normal standard original tool kit plus points and condenser to revert back to if the electronic ignitioon fails ( which it has not in almost 30 years in either car!)

For the Elan I take enough tools and spares to replace just about anything that could fail and actually be fixed during a weekend race meeting - But I have a Landcruiser to carry it all and a trailer to take the car back home on if all else fails :lol: i find the more spares i take the less things fail as its always somethiong you dont have that breaks

Probably enough to classify me as paranoid.

The last time I had a clear out there was a small 1/2" socket set with a penknife & couple of open ended spanners inside, a roll of insulating tape, a bulb with 2 crocodile clip leads, points/condenser/spare coil (just in case the "magic" electronic ignition gives up), a mole grip wrench, thin nose pliers and 3 screwdrivers. One of those puncture repair aerosols and a hammer to show the car who's boss if all else fails.

Clearly not enough, and as there was still room inside the spare wheel well I added a couple of rags and a pack of those plastic gloves. :roll: Colin Chapman would no doubt take the car off me !

Since mobile phones were invented I carry bugger all.
Bottle of oil, brake fluid, basic tool roll, and tow rope.

since I took out the spare wheel (as I didn't carry a jack or wheel brace) I think my "tool kit" comprises a can of Zoosh for inflating a flat, 2 screw drivers and a roll of Gaffa tape.. though not sure why I have the tape.. :?

Ohh an a towel, but that is more to mop up any water from rain inside the cabin

A gallon of petrol.
Fire extinguisher
Multi meter
Jumper pack
Tow rope
And a few spanners, screwdrivers and pliers.

And of course my recovery membership card.

I took the pic outside Hethel after the 60th. I think a Lotus Technician in the boot is a bit paranoid. I wonder if he comes as an optional extra?

I have:
a socket set
screwdriver set
spare set of spark plugs and spark plug socket
wire brush to clean spark plugs
a foot pump to inflate the spare
jack and handle
blanket for lying on ground to re-attach bits that have fallen off,
A car cover in case I have to cover it when parked in the rain.
A wooden stick of predefined length to hold bonnet/boot open
Thats about it I think, actually not much room left!

Apart from the usual tools already mentioned.
Can of WD40 moisture repellant.
Pair of disposable gloves.
Some tissue in a sealable bag so when its wet you can still dry things.
Bottle of water for topping up system or washer bottle
A length of electrical cable for repairing a circuit or feeding power to a defunct one etc (also good for lashing things up)
A photocopy of the electrical wiring diagram.

I carry a spare throttle cable --and barrel , set of 1/4 3/8 1/2 ratchets and sockets 1/4 to 1 1/8 complete set of open wrenches , some spare switches , spare lower a arm , dist cap and wires . spare wheel lug nuts . screw drivers , assorted nuts and bolts 3 rolls of wire and soldier,butain pen and connectors , spare plugs, can of oil, can of brake fluid ,, spare lower rad hose. assorted bulbs , head lamp ,condenser and points ,spare clutch master ,cell phone, CAA card for around town ...NOW to go some where serious the list gets longer ----ed

RAC Card .....Unless I have just done a job on the car, or suspect that I will need to. Then I carry the tools for the job :wink:

A few things that I carried when racing I found to be so usefull that I have them in my vehicles now.

Not an exhaustive list but the most invaluable get you home bodging materials.

Ratchet straps

Lockwire and pliers

2 pack epoxy putty

Gaffer tape

3M aluminium aircraft tape (I was lucky to get hold of some years ago its expensive)

Self amalgamating tape

Tywraps

Various bits of ductile wire, gas welding rods etc.

Brown turd type radweld.

Blue Hylomar

Multi_meter already mentioned but its of the highest importance, I even have one in my caravan.

Bits of perforated builders strapping (bit like meccano).

The lockwire and epoxy putty I even carried with me when I backpacked around the world, tools were limited to a Leatherman but the epoxy and wire got used on many many occasions, usually to get others out of trouble, but then thats also true of what we carry in our vehicles.
