Brake Pipe to Chassis Mounting - Rubber pipe

PostPost by: AHM » Thu Jan 12, 2012 11:03 am

Hi All,

Hopefully a simple question....

Where the copper brake pipe is attached on the chassis I believe it is mounted in a rubber pipe where the tab folds over it.

What size rubber pipe should I use?

Thanks,

Simon

I used screen washer tube, slit and fitted over the pipe before the tab is pressed down.

I had not actually realised this was done on the factory cars, it just seemed prudent

Same here. I don't remember seeing it used on the original chassis when I stripped it down at chassis change time but I wasn't happy with just putting the pipe under the tab without something to act as an insulating layer.

Yes I usually do the same thing with a split length of rubber fuel type pipe.

I do it everywhere when metal to metal contact with brake pipe is possible .......just in case.

"26 J 004 - PVC Tube 1/2mm X 10mm" (according to S1/S2/Coupe parts list)

S4 "added lightness" gone mad? :)

The illustration cross reference for 26 J 004 is "EL 74", meaning a component in the handbrake assembly. I looked all over Plate EL and Item 74 seems to be the grommet through which the handbrake cable housing passes through the bulkhead. The grommet certainly doesn't look like a piece of PVC tube although I agree that is the written description. The joys of early Lotus documentation!

I found such a bit of PVC on my S3 brake line....so assumed it was as Lotus intended.

I CANNOT imagine any of my PO's having had the nouse to fit it!

What do the latest editions of parts list say? Anyone?

Cheers - Richard
