Tyres

PostPost by: Jens Jeppsson » Mon Aug 08, 2011 5:17 pm

Hi all!

I?m new to this forum. Inherited a car from my father who passed a couple of years ago. It?s an Elan+2 -68 with a twin cam engine, big valve, racing cams and Cosworth pistons. Healthy little engine with cirka 7000km on the gauge. Engine?s been completely restored twice. But the engine isn?t the subject here. The car need a fresh set of tyres. On the car now is a set of Michelin MXT?s which to my knowledge aren?t produced anymore. Dimensions 185/70 R13. Any suggestions? The car is not a racer but might end up on the track on some local event. In other words, looking for a set of good allround tyres that can handle small countryside roads as well a couple of laps on local track.

Thankful for any help I can get!

sincerely Jens J

Patience Jens, this is a pretty international forum after all.. Besides we have riots to deal with!

I have no experience with 185/70 x13 tyres, preferring the original spec tyres, but I recall of plenty of postings about this tyre size so, if i may suggest in the meantime, try entering 185/70 in the search box and see what comes up...

Oh and welcome to the forum!

I use 185/60 x13 in a sticky compound - yoko A048 or Dunlop DZ3G

Most people dont put lots of miles on a Lotus so life on the road not a problem

I have a 5 speed plus 2 so the lower gearing not an issue on Australian freeways with their low speed liits but this may be more of an issue elsewhere or with a 4 speed box

cheers

Hi Jens,

The request for 185/70 recommendations limits the replies you'll get. I THINK a lot of users with this size use Yoko's.

The standard tyre is 165/80 which I use.

I CAN recommend Vredestein Sprint +'s in teh stenadrad size.
But bear in mind that they, and most tyre that size today, are only T rated.

I recently changed three tyres to another brand and am thus far less than impressed.

But the Vredestein's were great...in my humble opinion.

Best of luck,
Peter

Hi Jens

I have Yokahama on my +2 in 185/70. they were fitted on the car when I bought it.
They are fine with a pretty nice look, a bit wider than originals ones
Have a look here to see pictures of them : elan-plus-f13/has-anyone-yokohamas-a021s-185-their-t22994.html

Welcome aboard

Falken do the size tyres you're looking for plus a few others.
I use them and find them pretty good - but - that's compared to years of a different tyre on each corner :?

Has anyone used Nangkang tyres at all. I'd never heard of them but a search for 185/70/13 tyres brings up thier CX668 tyre as a budget option from several places. They are cheap at just over ?30 each, are H rated and get good reviews from people using them on hatchbacks and the like, but has anyone tried them on the Elan?

I'm tempted to give them a go as most of the other tyres Ive looked at are more than twice the price.

I can just imagine where a tire with such a name is sourced? Do you really wish to trust the same people who have poisoned our children and pets with Melamine in food and countless home issues with their wonderful interior masonry products, with your life? I think I'd rather walk.

I thank all of you for good feedback. Started out vacuming the forum for threads regarding the said dimension but couldn?t really find anything helplfull. Then I checked around the net to see what's available, not plenty but hopefully enough. Pretty much got my mind set on Hankook OPTIMO K415. Not cheap, not very expensive either. Saw the Falken ones aswell, anyone having experinces with those tyres? I?ll prolly go for the Hankooks unless someone, that means "you" persuades me to look elsewhere :-D How about Vredestein? They carry three different models in 185/70 R13... It?s veritable jungle ,and still this dimension I?ve come to understand, is getting hard to come by, atleast if you want perfromance tyres and not just your regulars... Well, yet again thanks all! I?ll be checking in again in a couple of days hopefully to find somtehing truly revolutionary tyrewise! Or else on goes a set of Hankooks...

Cheers mates!

p.s

really need to read up on the english, atleast words concerning cars and their parts...

Hehe

Well, I?m in and from Sweden. Though it?s been a couple of years since I quit school and therefor my english isn?t what it once was. But hey, that?s getting old to you, forgetting things. If there?d been any fairness in the world one would remember all the good stuff an forget all the stupid stuff... I guess that?s not how it is, sitting here and struggling with my english ;-)
