Rear suspension access grommet - Hole size?

Hi All,

Another slightly obscure question - Help appreciated!

The rear damper access holes in my car have been glassed over!

I want to cut the hole to fit the original grommets - What diameter should the hole be?

Thanks,

Simon

Simon, buy the grommets first, then measure them, then drill the holes. Presume you will be using a hole-saw? Do you have enough access room?

The hole on my S1 is 1.5" in diameter.

Simon, go to RD Einterprises under Elan parts and scroll down to what you need.
http://www.rdent.com/ The pictures will give you an idea of how they attach and what to expect.

Looks like I had 26/4020 out so I could get a picture of the grommit hole. I even washed off the dust so it didn't look like I neglect it like I do. jere is the picture

Thanks Guys!

Gerry - The car is completely stripped so about 25' clearance in the barn and a shopping list longer than your arm! so plenty of opportunity to get thst job ticked off now and buy the grommets later.

Michael - Thanks.

Mac - Thanks RD also give dimensions and price $19! checked SJSportscars in the UK and they are ?13. (for a little rubber grommet!)

Gary - Thanks for photos again. Dust is the least of your worries! Mine looks nothing like that... a sort of mangled mess of part hole with glass over the top.

Now I need to find a source of 1 1/2" id 1 3/4" od grommets for less than ?13 each.
Thanks,

Simon

Simon,

If you've got the body off, surely you should have some access to the bottom of the body and see the original hole. I always think it better to uncover original holes, for this or things like badge locations than it is to drill a new hole ever so close to the old and have them overlap. Chances are, the glass-over might only be bondo and might simply pop out revealing the old hole location and size.

Rear strut access caps can be easily machined from 3" Dia (75mm) Aluminium bar, they look nice and are
held in place with four small spots of clear RTV. They can be easily pushed out from underneath
for access when required, and then re-fixed again... I have had these in my S2 for decades. They
are spray painted with clear coat for protection.
