Not sure when this post changed off miata drivers and on to attacking spridgets, but in their defense i had 2 and still have one, and considering they were substantially cheaper han an elan at the timmm their a smashing little car.
And with tweaks can be fairly rapid.................I'm not surprised the early 60's sprites you had were slow they were only a 950 cc austin a30 engine!

Lots of chicks had Minis (and Coopers) too, but it never put me off having one when I was younger - or a Midget for that matter, in the days when MG drivers used to flash headlights as they passed one another.
Pity you can't flash in an Elan, by the time you've passed the lights have only just started to come up! Brewers droop? What would the girls say about that!

I've discovered the way to get the lights up, first pull switch, then lower window, stick left leg out of window while praying and singing god save the queen in c flat, this usually works!

I had a Midget first and then 'progressed' to an Elan. Sound like this is pretty common. It was a 1500cc rubber bumper Midget (I blame the Americans) with the Triumph Spitfire engine (bottom end went after 28,000 miles). Never thought of the Midget as a 'chick' car though..

sprite and midgets are definitely not chick cars - too many skinned knuckles and dirty nails for them to keep running for them --- ed
