Face it, you are driving a 'girlie' car. I used to bristle everytime I heard the ladies call it cute. After riding as a passenger they usually stop that nonsense though.

Dear Perplexed,
Take it as a compliment... I too have suffered in small ways from your problem but by studying the history of Lotus I KNOW what I'm driving and smirk. Ignorance is bliss and let them be happy. I think Miatas are good cars, haven't they provided over a million people the happiness of driving a car inspired by our Elans? (if you count the second hand owners). OK then, how many?
As far as the 'girlie' car thing, (or if you're not in Calarnoldfornia, the 'chick' thing,) have you guys ever seen a Miata in the thick of competition in the hands of a competent driver? male or female..... They can be very quick. And then lets talk about pennies per mile on the roads everyday. Can you name a better sports convertible?
Smile and wave back.
Abby

A little off the subject but when I had TR's I got "is that a triumph Herald"?
Single finger wave usually sets things right.

Dear Perplexed,
You are exibiting classic symptons of the "IwishIhadavee8 syndrome"
It usually effects the male gender in the age group between 18 and 60.
Studies of case histories have shown the root cause can be traced back to early childhood, the only known cure would be to get rid of the cause of the anxiety and in your case it would involve boxing up your 26R and shipping it to me, this would help immensely in my studies trying to find a cure.

Same experiences here, Keith! A visitor to the family's home once remarked as I drove up: "Ooh! That's CUTE! I'll have to get one of those for my daughter!" ...grrrr.... VERY politely asked her if she'd like a short ride. She foolishly took me up on it. Strapped her butt into the three-points (I think that's when she got a bit nervous ) and proceeded to wring her out well an' proper... and as she was grabbin' air I explained that her daughter would likely KILL herself within weeks of getting "one of these". Had her damn near in tears, begging me to stop as I demonstrated acceleration/cornering/braking at 9/10ths.
She deemed me an "evil person" as she shakily crawled out and away from the Elan ... I agreed with her and told her she should THANK me for saving her daughter's life. Never saw her again. Daughter likely wound up in an Impala.
I was younger then. I'm more tolerant now...
mehheh.

Ed,
You mean it can actually catch something?
Sprites usually had trouble pulling the skin off rice puddings. (at least mine did!)
Hamish.
