Armstrong damper removal from rear strut

Hello all,
I am trying to remove the old Armstrong damper internals from the rear strut tube. I have removed the top threaded insert, several layers of rubber/fibre/metal washers but the remaining internal parts and piston will not come out. I have removed what looks to be a set screw on the side of the strut but still - no go. Is there something else I need to do or is it just time to be brutal? I have been somewhat brutal with heat applied but don't want to continue unless I am sure that I am on the right track
Thanks in advance,
Don
