Oiling the trunnions

PostPost by: billwill » Fri Sep 27, 2019 3:36 pm

What do members use to squirt oil into the trunnions, last time I tried with a simple trigger oil can (which the gremlins have now hidden somewhere) but the pointy end would do nothing to the fitted grease ? nipple , so in the end I had to abandon oil and use a grease gun.

Trying filling the grease gun with oil was a dismal & messy failure.

Oil can like this type:

Grease gun like this one (roughly):

If you want to use EP 90 then just fill the oil can with this, remove the grease nipple and pump away till it comes out of the seal, then refit the grease nipple.

EP90, grease gun, pump pump pump until the old oil comes out of the top and runs clean.

Obviously laying a big rag down to catch the old oil!

Thicken the oil up a bit with some grease and then pump with a grease gun. It's slightly less messy and the oil doesn't fall out the bottom (quite so easily) if the plate isn't sealing 100%. Roughly 20% grease works for me.

I use a Wanner grease gun and EP90. I bought the gun at a car boot sale for a few quid and only use it for that job. To store it I pull the chain back and lock it in the cap to relieve the pressure on the oil as you do when filling it and keep it in a plastic bag.

As Eric, but got mine free when a neighbour, who wouldn't sell it, died!
