Air Filter

I have just got a plus 2 elan and am trying to work out the air filter box location, the pipes on the box face the engine? is this correct? I also saw somewhere about putting the box on its side with the pipes facing the front of the car? Does this improve airflow and better? Can you fit a K & N filter into the original filter box? It would be great if any other owners in the Essex UK area could get in touch as there are a number of questions I have which could probaly be solved by looking at a running car thanks

I have a K&N on my +2, but it replaces the original air box, as it is a very large cone type.

The standard airbox has the pipes facing the engine as standard. Later +2's had the airbox mounted vertically.

I too have a K&N cone filter in place of the original air cleaner. K&N part number RE-0810, fits on the origianl hose as I have been told. My hose is something I purchased at a parts store.

K&N! Yeah, K&N. Lousy commercial. I, too, have the K&N cone in the nose.

K&N actually makes a filter that fits the original canister. I purchased one several months back from JAE in the states (but I/m sure that others carry it).

first there is a back plate that fits on the carbs.the trumpets are then pushed in place.these should be sealed so fuel does not seep out .the air box is then connected.trunking is then fed from the air box down to the grill area to where the air filter is situated.the filter box has a round element.there are 2 pipes that come out of the air box these face the radiator.the filter box is then held down with 2 bolts at the front and a bracket at the rear.as for fitting k&n filters direct to the carbs i would advise againt it.the twin cam runs in a depressed controlled enviroment and the original lotus induction does the job.plus with a k&n filter fitted your lotus will sound more like a boy racers nova.i hope this will help you out regards mike c

I can't say that I have noticed any difference in sound with the cone type, as the induction is quite a way forward and low down. But the carb mounted filters do give more induction noise, depends on what you like to hear. A nova with lots of induction and exhaust noise looks daft, but on a Lotus its expected. ;)
