+2 mechanical fuel pump

PostPost by: checkrail » Sun Mar 27, 2022 5:18 pm

Hi, A couple of questions: Is it safe to use a NOS pump, I wondered if the diaphragm would have perished?

Why would a parts supplier on Ebay list a new pump for the Ford Cortina range but state it is not suitable for the Lotus Cortina? I thought any pump from the 105E onwards is correct provided that the corrections are threaded.

Thanks in advance John

It could be a service part manufactured recently and never put in to use.

It's possibe the top part of the pump is clocked differently for a LoCort.

The glass bowl fuel pumps fitted to standard Cortina and Lotus Cortina although they look the same operate at different pressures. The Lotus Cortina pump is lower pressure than the standard 1500 Cortina pump. The diaphragm springs have different stiffnesses.

That's interesting why would the LoCor use a lower pressure pump when it's using the same engines as the Elans?

In the Buckland Manual he refers to the standard Ford Cortina etc. pump with a max. of 2.5 psi which is correct for the Elans. Thanks John

The Lotus Cortina uses the same pump spring as the Elan (it's the same engine after all). It's the more common garden variety 1500cc push rod engined Cortina that has the different pump spring.

Thanks for that info. I'm thinking about a new pump for my +2 running on Webers which has a metal bodied one fitted by P.O.
Looking on Ebay it's a minefield, I certainly don't want one with too higher pressure, will have a word with Sue Miller

I bought a replacement metal pump from Sue, but I already had a Filterking regulator set at about 2 PSI.
I was surprised at how much crud the filter had caught after a few thousand miles. The replacement Spyder tank is about 10 to 15 years old and has done about 13,000 miles. I have emptied and flushed out the tank during that time as well, (only because I had it out). You might gain more by fitting the regulator than by changing a good pump. Just a thought.

As stated previously, the ordinary Cortina uses a different engine and carb to the Loti versions. Weber carbs normally run with 2.5 psi, so a pressure regulator is also worth fitting to make sure of flooding or indeed starvation. So like Eric I found the regulator(Filterking) caught quite a lot of crud.

I find it strange that in the Buckland Manual he recommends the Ford pump but doesn't mention the difference in pressure to the Lotus one.
