I'm trying to determine whether the currently installed petrol tank is the correct type for a Series 1 Elan (dispatched Oct. 1963). One item which looks odd to me is the venting tube on the filler next. This tube is currently sealed so not providing any venting. I had thought the petrol cap, being a vented type, was to serve the venting requirements. If this is the correct tank for a Series 1, what is the purpose of the two threaded bolts, horizontally facing, on the side facing towards the right rear fender? Thank you for your inputs.

Might be for a much later car because I think the two threaded bolts on the side held
the charcoal cannister, for emissions control. Just guessing here. But it doesn't mean
it won't work on your S1, or any Elan for that matter.

My early 64 has none of those items on its tank, it was however and Australian delivered car. Is it possible this a tank is from later Elan from period they fitted Strombergs and smog gear, I seem to recollect there was a canister fitted to catch the fumes....

I don't think any smog gear would have been fitted until early 70's.

Greg Z is on the right track; you have a Petrol tank from a late Federal S4 or Sprint that was fitted with a catch tank in conjunction with other emissions equipment.

There is no downside in using this tank instead of an original tank as long as the vent is blocked off.

That last picture and Greg's suggestion is what I was referring to!!
