Hi

I will buy a new aluminium tank for my S3. The question is if I need other type of fuel sender. I know than the early tank is smaller than the later.
And the fuel guage is also diferent...

Cheers

if you want to keep your gauge, you may want to double check what impedance range it is expecting (0-90 Ohms or 30-230 Ohms), see for instance

Certainly s3 fuel tanks were larger than those fitted to s4 etc(due the latter's need to accommodate the spare with the then standard bigger tyres.
Self-evidently the fuel level sender and the gauge must match: the systems fitted to s3 and s4 differ fundamentally and may not be mixed.

Fuel gauge does not measure quantity in units, just indicates the level of fuel in the tank.
If a S4 & S3 tanks are the same height there would be no need for a different tank unit

The gauges are based upon moving coil meters. On s3 the resistance is low when empty. On the s4 the resistance is high when empty.

I think I covered the difference of types fairly well in the previously indicated link.
