Rebuild Stromberg Carbs

PostPost by: 0005K » Mon Oct 05, 2020 2:58 pm

I have Stromberg emissions carbs on my 70 S4 which have been off the car in a box for 40 years. They have 50K on them. There is still oil in them. The tags were removed by a PO and are missing. I'm planning on cleaning and rebuilding with new gaskets, o-rings and diaphragms I have on order. Rebuild one at a time, I'm hesitant to disconnect them from each other and disturb the linkage. Or should I just take lots of pictures and notes, and separate them?

I have the Haynes Stromberg workshop manual. Any words of wisdom?

I presume we're talking about the wavy spring W linkage with the four screws clamping it to the spindles. That's an 'adjustable' part so I wouldn't worry at all about splitting them. You won't be able to get to the butterflies or change the seals without removing the linkage and you'll need to have the carbs independant of one another to balance them when they're rebuilt.

Split them apart, then send them to Joe Curto to rebuild

Thank you for the quick and informative input. I've heard good things about Joe Curto, but I'm going to have a go at them myself first. I'll disconnect them. The referenced thread does have a lot of good information. This forum is a great resource!

Too much opportunity to mess it up on my own. I split them apart and they are in transit to Joe Curto. Lead time is currently10-12 weeks.
Thank you M750Rider.

It wasn't cheap and it took a few months longer with Joe Curto than I had planned, but the result was well worth it! He makes Strombergs look like jewelry!
