The original did.

Does this look normal? There was also a layer on the engine side of the throttle plate. Kind of gooey and easy to remove with rag or scraper. If not normal, what could cause it? The engine runs fine. The small holes in the top of the manifold are where the (balance?) tube connects the two manifolds.

Pretty sure that it is normal fumes from the head breather tube. I guess the Stromberg head has an advantage that 3 & 4 take in the crud, wheras with a Weber head it's #4 only.

I have never seen anything like that in my engine.

The first picture is the manifold to cylinders 1 and 2. The second is to cylinders 3 and 4 so whatever is going on, it is in all 4 cylinders. The fact that it is downstream of the throttle plate leads me to believe it isn't from the breather tube.

Tom, your car has a non-Federal high-level balance pipe intake, as fitted in UK and other countries to Stromberg-carbed engines, like the S4 Elan. It has a couple of non-standard hose clips, whose purpose I guess is to provide some kind of mount for the throttle cable outer, which normally attached to a fitting on the cambox cover. That fitting doesn't exist on Big Valve camboxes.
As for the gooey crud, may I ask if your engine smokes a lot? There's often deposits in intakes, but not as much as you show and I'm wondering about the state of your valve guides.
Are there any pipes attached to your intake, like for vacuum headlamp operation or brake boosters? They might be sources of "stuff".

Hi Roger, thanks for the info. Yes the extra hose clamps were added by the PO to mount the throttle cable. I've never noticed any smoke from the exhaust, but I will make a point to check. If I remember correctly worn valve guides would show smoke especially on deceleration. There are no connections to the manifold as I converted to electric headlamp motors a while back and I don't have a brake booster.

Tom
