Removal of Fuel Pump

PostPost by: William2 » Sat Feb 14, 2015 11:27 am

Is it possible access-wise to remove the AC glass bowl type of fuel pump from an S4 Elan for replacement or repair? My car doesn't have any cut outs in the fibreglass transmission tunnel for access.

Don't know why there'd be any need for cut outs in the transmission tunnel for access to a fuel pump in the engine bay. Want to make this clearer?

Yes, I've done it many times, as far as I know only the Sprint has a cutout in the f/glass with a grommet in it but it does not really help even with the grommet removed.
When you refit the pump just make sure you get the operating arm on the top of the cam and not under it.
Note: sometimes it is easier to remove the engine mounts to get the engine slightly over.

Well my Oct 72 Sprint has this hole opposite the fuel pump with a grommet in (grommet removed in pic) and I assumed all Sprints had it.
I remember another thread where it was mentioned.

you are right Brian. I have just looked on my Sprint and there's a rubber bung.
I have never seen it before

My Fed S4 has the bung ..... does that mean its a Sprint?
Doesn't help with the removal though. I tend to do it from underneath

No......it probably means my 72 Sprint is a S4 despite the rear lip,the diff brace, the paint job,the bv cam cover, the Delorto's and a 72 chassis number etc.. etc....
