Still got a smile on my face...

John

P.S. measure twice/cut once if you don't want to fit it reversed...

Thanks John,

I popped into the MX5 shop on the way home from work this evening. I'll fit it this weekend.

Just installed EPA's suggested mod.
Bought an MX5 Mk2 filler on ebay and the suggested reducers.
Cut the end with the valve off the MX5 filler and pushed it into the smaller reducer.
The collar on the smaller reducer is a tight push fit into the pipe on the tank so pushed it in and put the hose back on. Not as professional as John's machined boss but looks like it should work.
Here are the pics.

End of MX5 filler pipe with non-return valve fitted into reducer.

Looks like it will fit with a good push!

Nice snug fit.

Hose back in place.

Now for the test........

Well, filled it brim full and went for a spirited drive. No spillage. Brilliant mod. Thanks EPA.
Dougal.

I followed Dougal's modification to EPA's idea which doesn't require the 57-50 mm ID reducer. Unfortunately, I overlooked his identification of a Mk 2 MX5 filler and bought a Mk 1 filler whose pipe is the wrong diameter for this application. If you're in the US, the Mk 2 is the NB generation of Miata manufactued from 1998-2005. Inserting the 50-45 mm ID reducer hose into the fuel tank pipe did not seem to be as tight as Dougal describes but seems secure enough to do the job.

My filler pipe takes a 90 degree turn at the bottom unlike those of the pipes pictured by other posters. The hardest part of the whole process was getting the nitrile hose fitted between the 90 degree pipe and the pipe into the fuel tank. There is very little room between the two pipes in which to maneuver the hose into place. I've attached a couple pictures to illustrate the pipes on my '71 Plus 2 S.

I'll have the car back on the road in the next couple weeks and will report back then.

Managed to buy a second hand filler neck but the one way valves are on back order with no outlook date :(

Yes I too have found the one way valves now seem to be unobtainium. :(

I found mine on ebay in the States. Worth a look.

Works an absolute treat!

Woohoo the filler neck was delivered today and already has the one way valve fitted :)

Now to order those reducers.

A note of caution here: viewtopic.php?f=40&t=42140

I've still not got round to revisiting this, but I think measurements should be taken of the tank spigot and valve diameter in order to order the correct spacers. In the meantime I achieved a filler cap seal by virtue of a piece of rubber sheet screwed to the cap underside.

Most modern cars have a second filler "cap", aka a spring load flap, at the top of the neck under the outer cap. There must be possible to find a suitable one of those to use instead of the Mazda part.

For example:

sorry but imho.
Why reinvent the Wheel, the Mazda mod works.
But it would be good to see one fitted.

And it also fun to figure your own solution.
