Hi folks i recently purchased a 1969 elan plus 2 , on inspection i have noticed that the cabs do not match. I have one 40dcoe31 and one 40 dcoe18. Could this be the reason that the car runs like death lol ?

I have replaced the plugs and confirmed the valve and ignition timing

Congrats on buying one of the best looking automotive designs on the planet. And that is from all angles.

Did you change points, condenser, plug wires and cap?
The carbs could use a rebuild? any fuel filters that need attention? vacuum leak? old vacuum hoses that need to be replace.......ah heck, replace em' anyway. It is surprising what little things can do to otherwise good engine.

Provided the chokes and jets and accelereator pump are all set up the same then they should perform very much the same. Then the only remaining signficant difference is the progression holes which are drilled into the casing and cannot be easily changed but this should only make a small difference if any.

Best if you have a matching set though. Someone was looking for a DCOE18 recently on the forum maybe see if you can swap it for a 31?

Thanks folks and i have changed the points and cleaned the carbs i thinking about installing a fuel filter as the carbs were filthy , will two small inline filters be enough ?.
o done the plugs and all that to.
I called a guy from weber and he informed me hat the progression holes are different, not going to lie not quite sure what they are for .

The progression holes manage the transition from idle to running on the main jets and cover the first 10 degrees or so of throttle plate opening. They admit progressively more fuel from the idle jet as the throttle is opened until the air flow is sufficient to bring the main jet into action.
